How to delete iMessages and text messages

Matt Egan explains how you can clear out whole
conversations and individual texts in iOS 7

You’ll have noticed that in the messages app,
the Edit button can no longer be found in the
top right-hand corner of any conversation.
It’s been replaced by a Contact button, which
takes away the ability to select a whole thread of
messages or a single message and delete it.
Delete text message conversations
On the plus side you can still delete entire message
conversations. You can do this by swiping to the
left in the list of all your text messages.
Delete a text message
When you can see a contact’s fi rst name at the top of
the screen, you know you’re in a text conversation.
Tap and hold on any one message bubble. You
should see a pop out message with two options
‘Copy’ and ‘More...’. Hit ‘More...’. You’ll now see a
little blue circle to the left of all messages. To the
left of the message you selected will be a fi lled in
circle with a white tick. Now tap on all the messages
you want to delete, and then hit the trash icon in
the lower left-hand corner of the screen. A ‘Delete
Message’ button will now appear. Hit it and you will
be able to delete all the selected messages.

Play Flash video and games on your iPad

Ashleigh Allsopp reveals the best apps to help you
access Flash-based websites and play Flash games

If you want to view Flash-based websites, play
Flash games or watch Flash videos on your
iPad, you’ll come across a bit of a problem: it
doesn’t support Flash. However, that doesn’t mean
you can’t get Flash on your iPad at all. There are
various apps available to download from the iOS
App Store for iPad 2, iPad 3, iPad 4, iPad Air, iPad
mini and iPad mini 2 that will help.
Best Flash apps for iPad
Browser apps that will enable you to play Flash
videos and games include Photon Browser, Pu n,
Skyfi re Browser and iSwifter Browser.
Photon Browser seems to be the most popular
choice for iPad users that require Flash support. It’s a
£2.99 app that acts as a
good alternative browser
to Safari, and also has
a Flash mode that you
turn on by tapping the
lightning bolt icon in the
top right corner.
We managed to visit
the Moshi Monsters,
Disney Fantasyland
and Flash Driving
Game websites with no
problems. It can be a bit
slow, but you can play
about with the settings
to improve the speed
and the resolution of the
websites you’re visiting.
Pu n, which has a
free trial version if you
want to test it out before paying the £1.99 for the full
version, displayed the Moshi Monsters (below) and
Flash Driving Game websites brilliantly, but failed
to load the Flash version of the Disney Fantasyland
site when we tried it on several occasions. But
having the option to try it out fi rst is a real plus here,
because you can then decide if it meets your needs.
Skyfi re (£2.99) is ideal for watching Flash
videos, but does not support Flash apps, games or
website animations, so doesn’t provide an all-round
Flash solution.
iSwifter is designed for Flash games, and is free
for 10 minutes per day for seven days. After that,
you’ll have to cough up £5.49 for the privilege.
You’ll need to be connected to Wi-Fi to use iSwifter,
as it doesn’t work with 3G or 4G connections.
Why doesn’t the iPad support Flash?
Apple’s late co-founder Steve Jobs famously
bashed Flash for mobile, and refused to allow the
technology on the iOS platform. Instead, Jobs
fought for the alternative HTML5 standard, which
is beginning to replace Flash around the web.

How to set up iCloud and back up your iPhone

Craig Grannell explains how activating iCloud will help
you share data between devices and keep it safe

Apple’s iCloud acts as a storage, data-sync
and backup service for your iPhone, iPod
touch or iPad. Through iCloud, iOS devices
were fi nally freed from being accessories to Macs
and PCs, because the likes of calendar events
and contact data would be synchronised on-thefl
y, rather than updated when
you plugged your device in
and synced.
But iCloud goes further than
ensuring your appointments
and phone numbers are up
to date. Increasingly, other
services rely on iCloud,
including browser bookmarks,
photo-sharing, app document
sharing, and the means to fi nd
your device should you lose it.
Additionally – and
perhaps most importantly –
iCloud enables you to keep
your data safe, by backing it
up to the cloud.
This walkthrough assumes
you already have an Apple ID.
1. Sign in
During the setup of a new or
upgraded device, you’ll get the
chance to sign in using your
Apple ID and then to use iCloud.
If you skip this step, you can still
set up iCloud on your device
— open the Settings app, and
then select iCloud. In the iCloud
window, type in your Apple ID
and password and then tap Sign
In. The device will most likely
take a few seconds to verify
your account.
2. Choose your services
You’ll next be asked whether
you want to merge the data
already on your device with iCloud. This means, for
example, if you’ve used your iPhone to enter some
appointments in Calendar, these will then be sent to
iCloud and made available on other devices signed
into the same iCloud account. Again, it will take
the device a short while to save this setting, so be
patient while it does so.
3. Allow location services
You’re next asked whether you allow iCloud to
use the location of your device. Given that you
control who else can see this, we recommend
turning this feature on. At the very least, it enables
you to discover the location of your device in the
Find My iPhone app, should you lose it. Turning
this feature on also means
you can invite other people to
see your location in the Find
My Friends app.
4. Choose your services
By default, iCloud turns
everything on, but you can tap
the switches to turn specifi c
options o if you don’t want the
associated data shared with
iCloud, or if you have no use for
the service. For example, if you
want your Safari bookmarks to
be device-specifi c and _not_
shared between devices, turn
o Safari. Note that with Mail,
iCloud sharing relates to an @
icloud.com address and not all your email. Should
you want other email to be readily accessible and
synced across devices, investigate IMAP.
5. Start your backup
Scroll down to and select Storage & Backup.
Within, you’ll see how much total storage space
you have available on iCloud (5GB free by default),
and how much is available. iCloud backup will
be on by default, and will be triggered when
the device is plugged-in, locked and on Wi-Fi.
However, you can also manually start a backup
by tapping Back Up Now. Backups are incremental
(as in, they only upload new data), but the fi rst one
may take some time.
6. Manage your backups
Depending on your iCloud
usage, you may fi nd Apple’s
5GB for free fi lls up quickly. In
fact, if you’ve existing backups
in iCloud or too much data on
a single device, you’ll have to
either pay for more storage
(tap Buy More Storage, select
an option, and cover your ears
to block your bank account’s
blood-curdling screams), or tap
Manage Storage and select a
backup to edit.
7. Prune backup data
On selecting a backup, you’ll
(after a sometimes lengthy
delay) in the Backup Options section see the data
that’s being stored, and how much space each
app commands. Should you need to remove items,
prioritise those that take up most space but that you
can also easily restore from elsewhere. For example,
Camera Roll images will be being saved to Photo
Stream and downloaded into iPhoto if you have that
connected to iCloud.
8. Back up to iTunes
It’s possible to restore a new or existing device from
your iCloud backup. New devices o er the choice
during setup; older ones can be deleted via Settings
> General > Reset and tapping ‘Erase all content and
settings’; you can then opt to restore from a backup
during setup. However, iCloud
does occasionally go wrong.
Therefore, also periodically back
up to your Mac or PC via iTunes.
To do so, select your device, and
in the Summary tab, click Back
Up Now. The backup may take
some time.
9. iExplorer backup
Occasionally, it’s useful to back
up data from a specifi c app,
thereby enabling you to restore
it later (versus restoring an entire
backup); for example, you might
have completed a game and
want to free up space, but don’t
fancy the idea of some time in
the future starting from scratch after a reinstall. Some
games pull down saved data from iCloud, but most
don’t. Manual saves can be made using iExplorer.
Connect your device to your Mac or PC and select
Apps from the sidebar. Select the Documents and
Library folders, Ctrl-click and export them to your
computer. On a later app reinstall, these can be
dragged back to reinstate your progress.
10. Reset iCloud or your backup
If everything goes horribly wrong, take o and nuke
the entire thing from orbit — it’s the only way to be
sure. To do this, go to Settings > iCloud and tap
Delete Account. The service will be removed from
your device, and you can then start afresh.

Guide to buying tech from the US

We look at the pros and cons of buying gear from the US

Doesn’t it feel like you’re being scammed?
You’re shopping around for new kit, but
the UK prices are often a hefty percentage
higher than they are in America. How can this be
when what you want is frequently made in China, so
incurs the same shipping costs wherever it’s finally
sold? You may be thinking the simple solution is to
buy overseas and have your purchase shipped to
your door, but sometimes it isn’t that simple.
Tax
The first thing to understand is that it isn’t always
cheaper to buy from the US, which means you need
to shop smarter. The prices on most American ads
and websites exclude tax, the rate of which can vary
from state to state.
So, when you see Apple advertising the 21.5in 4K
iMac for $1,499 (£1,036.36) in the US and £1,199 in
the UK, the £163 difference isn’t a true reflection of
the saving you can make by shipping one over (or
buying one when you are on holiday). Customers in
Chicago would want to add an extra $93.69 in sales
and state tax, bumping up the price to $1,592.69
(£1,101.14), while Beverley Hills shoppers are looking
at a tax bill of $134.91 for a total price of $1,637.91
(£1,132.38), which is almost as much as the UK figure.
Import duty
If you are planning a holiday to the US, or perhaps
heading out there on business, you may be thinking
that you could pick up a new laptop or iPhone while
you are there.
There are a few things to note, first as we mention
above, you will have to pay sales tax for the state
in which you are buying the Apple product, which
may already drive the price up significantly. The
other consideration is import duty for which you
will be liable at customs. Now you could take your
new laptop out of its box, leave the box behind, and
carry it through in a laptop bag, but do note there
are giveaways that you have bought in the US – not
least the positioning of some keys on the keyboard,
and the fact that the plug will be two pronged.
So if you did it all above board, you would be
looking at paying sales tax in the state you bought
it in, and also paying Import Duty as you pass
through customs. We looked at shipping and mailing
products provider Pitney Bowes duty calculator tool
to calculating this – there is more information in the
next section – and you could end up paying more
for your Apple product than you would have if you’d
bought it in the UK.
Delivery fees
You don’t have to be heading to America to get a
Apple product from that continent. You could find a
company that will let you buy from them directly.
But, should you decide to buy from a company
that will manage the delivery to you in the UK you
will still have delivery fees and import duties to
consider, as well as the fact that some retailers
won’t ship outside of the US.
Fortunately, there are companies that will
handle each of these on your behalf. It all
sounds a bit dodgy, though.
BundleBox, MyUS and Borderlinx will each
provide you with US address to which you can
have your products delivered so the retailer won’t
know where they’ll ultimately be forwarded on to.
Your chosen address provider will then dispatch
your purchases to the UK using a regular carrier
service (DHL in the case of Borderlinx, Fedex with
BundleBox, and DHL, Fedex or UPS with MyUS).
The services vary slightly, depending on who
you choose to use. BundleBox, for example, lets
you pre-pay any import duties that may apply (you
pay them, and they pass it on) so you shouldn’t
receive a call to the post office to settle the balance
before the parcel is released. MyUS will notify you of
broken or prohibited merchandise once it arrives at
its depot, so you don’t incur costs on products that
need returning. MyUS even has a personal shopper
service where it will buy a product on your behalf if
the outlet you’re using won’t accept your preferred
payment method (some stores won’t accept a
foreign payment card, for example).
Be aware, though, that some retailers are getting
wise to this ruse. When demand for the first iPad
massively outstripped supply on its US launch,
Apple pushed back shipping dates here in the UK.
We advised using BundleBox then, too, until Apple
cancelled all orders placed through BundleBox’s
BuyForMe service.
Even if someone else is importing the product for
you, Import Duty will still figure. Working out the total
cost of your import isn’t as simple as adding on a flat
20 percent to account for the VAT that will be due
when it passes through British customs. Shipping
and mailing products provider Pitney Bowes
maintains a handy import duty calculator where you
can specify what you’re importing and what it costs
from the retailer. We used the $1,499 price of the
4K iMac as a test case, which MyUS could ship to
‘Basic’ members in one to four business days via
DHL for $157.18. However, Pitney Bowes calculated
the overall ‘landed’ cost including duty and taxes
to be £1395.87 (£232.64 of which would be paid to
Customs), which is almost £200 more expensive
than the regular UK price.
Why you shouldn’t buy iPhones from USA
There are some products you shouldn’t buy and get
shipped over – or at least be careful when doing
so – and iPhones come close to the top of that list.
There are two reasons for this. First, to get the best
deals in the US you’ll need to sign up to a two-year
contract with an American cell network, which will
only work as an expensive roaming connection in
the UK, potentially wiping out any savings you might
make on the hardware. Second, Apple sells slightly
different iPhones in different countries to cater for
geographically-differentiated network technology.
In total it sells four different 6s and four 6s Plus
iPhones catering for, respectively, the US, China
(two models) and the rest of the world. One 6s and
one 6s Plus sold in the US is the same as the ‘rest
of the world’ edition, but you’ll need to make sure
you’re buying the correct build of each (specifically,
for the 6s, it’s model A1688 (GSM), while for the 6s
Plus it’s the A1687 (GSM).

If you are buying one with a network lock-in,
or a second-hand phone that has since been
unlocked (which rather defeats the object or
buying overseas), you’re looking for the models
that were designed for use on Boost, Credo,
iWireless, Sprint, T-Mobile or Verizon.
What you shouldn’t buy App Store apps
and Software Subscriptions from the USA
It used to be easy to buy boxed software overseas
and ship it home. However, with the move to
downloads things are more complicated –
particularly as it’s now easier for developers to
ensure you’re complying with licenses and only
using their products in authorised territories.
In the case of downloads, your hardware is often
tied to a specific store, such as the iTunes Store or
Mac App Store, and although it is possible to open a
US iTunes account and top it up using gift cards (so
you don’t need to add an American credit- or debit
card) you risk having your account terminated, your
purchases revoked and action taken against you.
Apple’s terms and conditions for the US store state
from the outset that, “the iTunes Service is available
to you only in the United States, its territories,
and possessions. You agree not to use or attempt
to use the iTunes Service from outside these
locations. Apple may use technologies to verify
your compliance.”
The same goes for subscription software. An
Office 365 personal subscription in the US costs
$69.99 a year (£48.53), but £59.99 a year over here,
making the UK around 23 percent more expensive.
So, why not sign up through Microsoft’s US pages,
rather than the UK site? Once again the answer is
down to eligibility: by purchasing your subscription
through the US you’d be contravening the End User
License Agreement, which could leave you liable
to prosecution. Specifically, Microsoft states, “You
may activate the service/software only in the region
in which it was acquired. Microsoft’s software and
services are subject to US’ and other jurisdictions’
export and technology laws and you agree to
comply with all such applicable laws and regulations
that apply to the software and/or services.”
Other issues
You may be concerned that your Apple warranty
won’t hold up if you bought the product abroad.
Luckily Apple’s warranties are valid internationally
in any country that has an Apple Authorised Service
Provider. We recommend buying Apple Care
though, but from the UK, or you may end up in a
sticky situation later on.
Another thing to be prepared for if you are buying
any product with a keyboard, is that the keyboard
layout will be different. This is more of an issue if
you buy a laptop because its easy enough to get a
new keyboard for a desktop. The key difference will
be the # key instead of a £ symbol on the 3 key, it
is also unlikely to have a € symbol. You can change
these in settings, but they won’t be marked on the
keyboard, which could prove annoying.
Finally there is the fact that the plug will be
different, although there shouldn’t be a problem with
the voltage (we recommend you check though).
None of these things may worry you, but they
are a giveaway as to where you bought the Mac.
So should you ever buy
Apple products from the US?
Answering this question used to be a no-brainer,
but it’s no longer so clear cut. Buying overseas – so
long as you comply with any applicable licenses
– will often let you get new products earlier;
particularly as Apple has a tendency to address
its home market first, and roll out to the rest of the
world later on. However, the mechanics of making
foreign purchases mean it’s now easier than ever
for retailers to restrict a product’s use to specific
geographical areas, and the savings aren’t as great
as they once were. It’s perhaps the clearest case yet
of caveat emptor: buyer beware. Nik Rawlinson

Substituting home-whipped butter in baking

In my baking, can I substitute
heavy cream whipped to the butter
stage for store-bought butter?
-Rick Beaudin, Bangor, ME
Susan Purdy replies: It's
probably not a good idea, because
the moisture and air
content of the butter will vary
too much for consistent results
in your baking If you do want to try whipping
cream to the butter stage,
the easiest way is to start with
1 cup (8 ounces) heavy cream
in the blender. (It's important
to use heavy cream because it
contains the full 36% butterfat
you need to make butter) .
Process on high speed until
stiff, 2 to 3 minutes. Add liz cup
ice water, cover, and blend on
high speed about 1 minute, or
until the mixture clearly separates into solid butter and a
milky whey. Strain through at
least four or five layers of
cheesecloth set in a sieve.
Twist the ends of the
cloth around the butter,
pressing with your
hands to expel as much liquid
as possible. Finally, remove the
butter from the cheesecloth
and knead it on the counter to
remove more liquid. Scrape
the butter onto clean paper
towels, patting and blotting it
until dry. Finally, press the
butter into a mold or dish.
With this blender method,
8 ounces heavy cream yields
about 3 ounces (or a generous
YJ cup) unsalted butter.
If you're really interested in
making your own butter, you
can order larger-capacity hand
or electric butter churns from
a farm-supply catalog.

Trade college loans for mortgage debt

“A new home-loan refinance program allows
borrowers to swap student loans for mortgage
debt at today’s low interest rates,” said Ann
Carrns in The New York Times. The program,
called the Student Loan Payoff ReFi, is offered
by nonbank lender SoFi and mortgage giant
Fannie Mae. It allows homeowners who have
student loans, or home-owning parents who
cosigned student loans with their children, to
refinance their mortgage and take out additional
home equity as cash to pay off student
debt. “The borrower is left with a new, larger
mortgage, but at a lower interest rate.” However,
borrowers with federal student loans
will lose protections like the option to defer
payments and the repayment programs that tie
monthly payments to income.

Coping with an uncertain world

Sorry, but this financial adviser is at a
loss for words, said Carl Richards in The
New York Times. After Donald Trump’s
shocking victory in the presidential election,
“I have no idea what to say about
the markets, investing, or budgeting.”
It’s not clear how a Trump presidency
will affect your home price, retirement
accounts, or plans to pay for college. But
I do know a thing or two about uncertainty,
which we all inevitably confront
when making decisions about money.
The key question is this: “What can you
control right now?” Make a list. Consider
anything not on your list “something
that may cause you anxiety” if you focus on it too much.
“A time of political shock isn’t a time for investing action,” said
Jason Zweig in The Wall Street Journal. Rattled investors are
being bombarded with advice about which stocks to buy and
sell under a Trump presidency. But “little is ever clear about an
incoming president,” especially this one. When President Obama
took office vowing to impose health-care regulations, you might
have expected health-care stocks to plummet. Instead they
“ended up resoundingly outperforming the rest of the stock market.”
President George W. Bush boosted military spending—a
clear signal to invest—but defense stocks lost 19 percent in 2001
and nearly 7 percent in 2002. “The only sensible step for investors
to take at a time like this is to do nothing.”
The truth is, there’s no way to
“Trump-proof” your portfolio, said
Walter Updegrave in Money.com.
“You’re better off setting a strategy
grounded in the things over which you
have the most control—how much
you save, how broadly you diversify,
[and] how much risk you take.” The
tried-and-true investing goal is to build
a portfolio that will give you a shot at
building a reasonable nest egg under
a variety of market conditions. Of
course, any plan you make will inevitably
rest on forecasts and assumptions,
which means you’ll want to
periodically check in and adjust your plans to ensure that you’re
still on track. But don’t stress yourself out trying “to predict the
Fed’s every move or attempting to outguess the markets.”
“The morning after the election, I woke up and started reviewing
my budget to figure out how to put more money in my
savings account,” said Tiffany Johnson in TheBillfold.com. I
work in education, and Trump’s proposed policies for my industry
have been varied and contradictory, not to mention the
president-elect’s potential impact on everything from my health
care to my retirement account. But I’ve found that taking “small,
tangible actions” is helping me combat my feelings of unease
and helplessness after the election. “I haven’t started building a
bunker (yet!), but I am preparing in the best way I know how.”

The 2017 Nissan Titan

Autoblog.com
Nissan has fi nally remade its half-ton pickup,
and the fi nished product is “absolutely
impressive in many ways.” Fast, comfortable,
and equipped with an enviable array of
task-ready bed features, it will make many
owners of the original Titan very happy.
None will be surprised that the power train
is arguably the best feature. After all, “Nissan
is at its heart an engine company.” But
even with its “fantastic” 5.6-liter V-8, the
2017 Titan doesn’t appear ready to leapfrog
any of the segment’s best-sellers.
New York Daily News
The Titan’s beefi er sibling, the dieselpowered
Titan XD, remains a more distinctive
offering. The half-ton Titan “never lacks
for power,” though, and its reduced weight
produces “delightful steering feel.” That
seems appropriate for a pickup that’s “as
much a family hauler” as it is a workhorse.
Parents will appreciate the spacious crew
cab, the low step-in height, and clever childseat
latches. “Exceptionally comfortable”
front seats should make long hauls fl y by.
Car & Driver
But to win over Ford, Chevrolet, and Ram
buyers, Nissan needed to innovate. The
new Titan, clearly aiming at holding its
own, sits right at the midpack in its towing
hauling, and fuel economy ratings. In
a market where loyalty matters, though,
“simply matching the incumbents may not
be enough.”

Fashion designer Tom Ford has
made his second feature film,
and it “makes a lot of noise
for a movie that doesn’t have
much to say,” said Will Leitch in
NewRepublic.com. Amy Adams
plays a rich gallery owner who
loses herself in a manuscript,
written by her novelist exhusband,
that relates a violent
tale of rape and revenge. Three
stories soon intertwine: the dissolution of the couple’s
marriage years earlier, the empty life that Adams’
character leads now, and the Texas-based story in the
novel. The results are “never dull” and “never not
gorgeous,” but the film’s attempt to merge pulp with
art commentary never comes
off. Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal
“do some real acting here,” said
Stephanie Zacharek in Time
.com. Gyllenhaal plays both the
ex and the protagonist of the
novel, a man whose wife and
daughter are assaulted by three
strangers in a nighttime highway
sequence that proves “the best in
the film—tense and beautifully
sustained.” But too much of the movie feels “glazed
and remote,” as if it weren’t even made by a human.
It’s ultimately “a coffee-table book of a nightmare,”
said Ty Burr in The Boston Globe. Though “easy to
admire,” it’s also “easy to close the cover on.”

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

“What a relief to get away
from Hogwarts,” said Anthony
Lane in The New Yorker. J.K.
Rowling’s Harry Potter spinoff
introduces a new story, set
decades before Harry enrolled
at the storied school, and the
result is “a cunning and peppy
surprise.” Eddie Redmayne stars
as Newt Scamander, a wizard
who arrives in 1926 New York
to find and collect endangered magical beasts in
an enchanted suitcase. Redmayne overdoes Newt’s
shyness, but the rest of the cast is “sturdy,” and the
magic tricks Newt and friends toss off remind us
that wizardry is most compelling out in the world,
when it “clashes against the iron of ordinary lives.”
Unfortunately, Fantastic Beasts
“doesn’t really have a plot,” said
Dan Kois in Slate.com. Several
creatures escape Newt’s suitcase,
prompting a hunt through a city
awash in anti-wizard prejudice.
But Rowling has too many stories
and rules to establish for the
five-film franchise she’s launching,
and this entry gets bogged
down by exposition. The best of
the Harry Potter movies “benefited from screenplays
that combined sharp dialogue with strong dramatic
carpentry,” said Joe Morgenstern in The Wall Street
Journal. This “perfectly pleasant” movie does “little
more” than set the stage for a potentially enjoyable
franchise. “Here’s hoping for magical sequels.”

Manchester by the Sea

Kenneth Lonergan’s third feature
in 17 years is “a staggering
American drama, almost
operatic in the heartbreak it
chronicles,” said A.A. Dowd
in AVClub.com. It wouldn’t be
nearly as powerful, though, if it
didn’t consistently make room
for the everyday headaches—like
a misplaced parked car—that
crop up in good times and bad.
The results are “almost unspeakably moving—and
at times, disarmingly funny.” Casey Affleck stars
as Lee Chandler, a handyman who’s nursing a deep
emotional wound when his brother dies and he
learns, after returning to his seaside hometown, that
his 16-year-old nephew is to be put in his custody.
Playing a man broken by past
tragedy, Affleck delivers “one
of the most fiercely disciplined
screen performances in recent
memory,” said A.O. Scott in The
New York Times. Even when
Lee makes a joke, “the force
of his pent-up emotion is terrifying.”
And Affleck’s co-stars
are nearly as fine, with Lucas
Hedges particularly good as
a teen trading loving jabs with his haunted uncle.
Michelle Williams is outstanding, too, “even by her
standards,” said Kenneth Turan in the Los Angeles
Times. Playing Lee’s ex, she doesn’t get many scenes,
but when she does, she shows “a level of fearlessness
and raw vulnerability that will tear your heart out.”

Is life hiding in ice cauldrons on Mars?

Scientists have identified two funnelshaped
craters on Mars that may contain
water, heat, and nutrients—the ingredients
in the formation of life. The odd-looking
depressions—one in the Hellas Planitia
basin, the other in the Galaxias Fossae
region—were first spotted several years
ago, but researchers were only recently
able to analyze them in detail, reports
Astronomy.com. Using equipment that creates
a 3-D map from 2-D images, the team
from the University of Texas found that
both craters are shaped like funnels. The
Galaxias depression has debris around it,
indicating it was probably caused by an
asteroid impact. But the Hellas Planitia
crater has similar geological features to
the “ice cauldrons” found in Iceland and
Greenland, which form when underground
volcanic activity melts away surface ice.
If the same process occurred on the Red
Planet, the interaction of lava and ice
would have created an environment with
liquid water and chemical nutrients— fertile
ground for microbial life. The researchers
hope future missions to Mars will
explore the craters further. “These features
do really resemble ice cauldrons known
from Earth, and just from that perspective
they should be of great interest,” says
University of Iceland volcanologist Gro
Pedersen, who was not involved in the
study. So far, several missions to Mars
have yet to find any evidence of microbes,
though some scientists think it’s a matter
of looking in the right place.

Twitter tries to drain the swamp

Twitter “may be getting serious about reclaiming
its platform from trolls,” said Charlie
Warzel in BuzzFeed.com. The social network
unexpectedly suspended accounts belonging
to prominent white nationalist and
alt-right users last week as part of a large
effort to rein in hate speech and harassment
on the site. The decision came just hours
after the company unveiled long-awaited
tools for combating online abuse, including
an expanded “mute” feature allowing
users to block specific words and offensive
phrases. The move was met with howls of
outrage from banned users. In a YouTube video, Richard Spencer,
the head of an alt-right think tank called the National Policy
Institute, declared that was he “alive physically, but digitally
speaking, there has been execution squads across the alt-right.”
Twitter’s crackdown comes amid a rising tide of online hate
speech, said Jessica Guynn in USA Today. An October report
from the Anti-Defamation League found that more than
2.6 million tweets with anti-Semitic language were sent between
August 2015 and July 2016, many directed against journalists
covering Donald Trump. The neo-Nazi website The Daily
Stormer recently published a list of more than 50 Twitter users
who expressed fear about a Trump presidency, “urging its readers
to ‘punish’ them with a barrage of tweets that would drive
them to suicide.”

Plenty of folks within the alt-right community
are loudly complaining that Twitter’s
actions are “blatant censorship,” said Cale
Guthrie Weissman in FastCompany.com.
Many of the banned users appear to have
taken up residence on Gab, a new alt-right
social network that works like a combination
of Twitter and Reddit. Some are even
using it to coordinate anonymous harassment
campaigns on Twitter in retribution
for the company’s actions. Gab’s Trumpsupporting
founder, Andrew Torba, who
was kicked out of a Silicon Valley startup
incubator for violating its anti-harassment policy, says companies
have no right to decide what’s harassment and what isn’t. “Hateful
and harassment are subjective terms,” he says.
“Twitter is acting wholly within its rights,” said David Frum
in TheAtlantic.com. But I still think it’s making a mistake. The
perception of “arbitrary and one-sided speech policing” is exactly
what drives so many young men toward radical, alt-right beliefs
in the first place. Let’s not turn “loudmouths and thugs” into free
speech martyrs. That’s why Twitter needs to be transparent about
what kind of behavior merits a ban, said Will Oremus in Slate
.com. Right now, the company doesn’t discuss specific tweets,
even with the user being suspended. More transparency won’t
insulate Twitter from criticism, “but it would at least give the
company a stronger claim to the high ground.”
